Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Unsung Hero Awards

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Unsung Hero Awards recognize extraordinary individuals whose quiet acts of service have created a lasting impact throughout Bakersfield and Kern County. These are the leaders, mentors, volunteers, advocates, and changemakers who work behind the scenes—not for recognition, but because they are committed to improving the lives of others. Inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Unsung Hero Awards celebrate those whose compassion, leadership, and service strengthen our community every day. The awards are intended to shine a light on individuals whose selfless contributions often go unnoticed but whose impact is deeply felt. 

The Unsung Hero Awards recognize individuals who:

• Demonstrate exceptional service to the community 
• Inspire others through leadership and integrity 
• Make a lasting impact without seeking recognition 
• Strengthen neighborhoods, organizations, or the lives of others 
• Promote unity, compassion, and opportunity 
• Embody Dr. King's values of service, justice, equality, and hope

Nominees must:

• Live, work, volunteer, or serve in Kern County 
• Have demonstrated meaningful community impact in Kern through volunteerism, leadership, mentorship, advocacy, or public service 
• Not be elected solely based on professional responsibilities, but for service that extends beyond their job duties 
• Be nominated by another individual or organization (self-nominations are not accepted) 

Individuals from all sectors are eligible, including nonprofit organizations, education, business, healthcare, public safety, faith communities, youth-serving organizations, and neighborhood groups.

Recipients will be selected by an independent volunteer committee composed of respected community leaders representing education, business, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, and civic leadership. Committee members will evaluate nominations using a standardized scoring rubric to ensure a fair, transparent, and objective selection process.
