APPLICATION OPENS September 1st


The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Scholarship Program awards scholarships each year to students pursuing post-secondary education. These are students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, community service, and a commitment to making a positive difference in Kern County. Inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., these scholarships recognize students who are preparing to become tomorrow's leaders through education, service, and civic engagement.


Our goal is to remove financial barriers, encourage academic success, and invest in students who are committed to strengthening their communities.

Scholarship Purpose

 The Legacy Scholarship supports students who:

  • Demonstrate academic achievement 
  • Exhibit leadership in school or the community 
  • Have a record of volunteerism or community service 
  • Show integrity, compassion, and perseverance 
  • Are currently pursuing higher education or career training 
  • Embody Dr. King's values of service, leadership, justice, and opportunity 


The scholarship recognizes students who are committed to using their education to positively impact their communities.

Scholarship Awards

 Legacy Scholarships will be awarded annually. Scholarship amounts will be determined each year based on available funding and sponsorship support. 

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a native and/or resident of Kern County, California. 
  • Be currently enrolled at an accredited two-year college, four-year university, trade school, or vocational program for upcoming term. 
  • Have completed a previous term in post-secondary education. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to community service, volunteerism, or civic engagement. 
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. 
  • Submit a completed application and all required supporting documents by the application deadline.

Required Application Materials

  • Completed scholarship application 
  • Personal statement (500–750 words) 
  • Current college transcript (official or unofficial) 
  • Proof of current enrollment
  • One letter of recommendation (professor, employer, mentor, clergy member, or community leader) 
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) and/or Resumé with list of community service, leadership activities, honors, and work experience
